OVERALL STORY: This story was really fantastic and moving. It was raw and absolutely stunning. Kang Mi-rae is such a unique main character and gives such a unique perspective on life. I wasn't really a fan of plastic surgery (recreational use) but this show gave me a new way to look at it. Her life was so difficult and for her, plastic surgery was the only way out of everything. While I still hold to the basic opinion that plastic surgery is normally unnecessary I now know that sometimes it is necessary for some people. Another lesson that was cemented in my mind was the fact that no one really knows what is going on in someones life and it is not right to unfairly judge them. It also talked a lot about beauty at face value. They are so many characters who only look at the physical and it is really heartbreaking to watch. No one wants to only be judged by that. It was truly sickening to watch that. Absolutely powerful. There is a love triangle in this show if you were curious. This one dude who is really nice likes her but in the end she rejects him because she likes the main guy. I just thought you should know it's there.
MAIN COUPLE: Oh my gosh this couple was so precious. I loved that he didn't care what she looked like in the past or now. He thought she was pretty no matter what. Although Mi-rae was more than capable of defending herself he was always willing and able to step in. They had such great chemistry and I absolutely adored their scenes. It took FOREVER for them to get together but their scenes together are so cute. My favorite thing is when she decides that she is going to come out and tell everyone that they are dating. She originally doesn't because she doesn't want to get judged but then she tells everyone. And it is so precious to see that growth in her. They really are the cutest though I mean they are beyond sweet.
OTHER COUPLES: There is one couple that I'd particularly want to mention because it made me so angry. There is this girl who is bullied because she is not starving model skinny and this dude stands up for her and tells her that he thinks she's pretty. They start dating but then the main "bad" girl gets jealous and basically comes between them by flirting with him. The thing that makes me mad about this is that he FALLS FOR IT. What kind of sucky boyfriend is he? To say he cares about someone but then when someone "prettier" comes along to completely cheat on her and break up because of that. It makes me beyond angry however it does drive the main point of shallowness in this show. There is also this romance hinted a little between Mi-rae's roomate and the guy who was originally in love with Mi-rae. Not much but it's there.
KANG MI-RAE: She was someone that was really interesting to watch. She had so much growth and development throughout the show that was great to see. She starts out as someone who only looks at outer beauty because of how she was treated when she was young. She discovers that trait in herself and realizes how destructive it is. She learns to love herself both who she is now and who she was. She learns that life is not all about shallow outer beauty. And that sometimes the most beautiful people have the hardest lives and the worst insecurities.
DO KYUNG-SEOK: You could not have made a more perfect love interest for this show than him. He is intelligent, kind, observant, and not shallow like the majority of people in this show. He is also the only one who sees the ruder side of Hyun Soo-a and sasses her like no one else. He gets a lot of bad rep from the main girl due to that for a while. Being intelligent like that has to be hard. However sometimes I think he is the only sane one in the first part of this show. However he is also super sweet with (as mentioned above) the main girl and those he comes in contact with. He can be blunt as all heck sometimes but there is this sensitive side we come to see.
HYUN SOO-A: I did not expect her character to turn out the way it did. At first she was just your typical mean girl. Mind you she was slightly more crafty then the normal spoiled popular girl. She was never openly mean but hid behind a veneer of innocence. But as the show went on we got to see that her life was not as picture perfect as she had said it was. She doesn't live in a fancy apartment, she doesn't have loving parents, and she was bullied as a kid. Due to that bullying she believed that if she was considered beautiful then that was all that mattered. She had to do everything she could to be the best and the most favored. She made herself throw up in order to keep herself the perfect amount of skinny. Piece by piece was discovered and she went through A TON of growth. She taught me a lot.
