Kill Me, Heal Me

Kill Me, Heal Me (Available on Viki)
Content Warning: Language (more on that below), innuendo, and violence
(So note on the language: the first episode has the worst of it so if you are looking to avoid harsher language avoid that one--I know I probably will never watch the first episode again--but throughout the rest of the show is sparse. There is the occasional character that is a little more foulmouthed but like I said it is rarer. Just a heads up so you can decide for yourself! The most frequent word used is the b word. )
My Rating: A-

Character Glossary:
Cha Do Hyun: Rich grandson of the chairwoman with D.I.D.
Oh Ri Jin: Love Interest and Psychiatrist
Oh Ri On: ^^brother and writer
(There are other characters but I only want to focus on these three. The personalities will all be discussed under Cha Do Hyun's section.)

Kill Me, Heal Me is about a guy with Dissociative Identity Disorder. (More commonly known as Multiple Personality Disorder) He comes back to Korea and tries to keep reign over his personalities while trying to manage his position in the family company. His fate collides with psychiatrist Oh Ri Jin who--after a couple meetings---agrees to become his secret physician. But there is more to everything than either of them thought. Trying to uncover exactly what caused him to split apart will open up more wounds then either of them might be ready to face.

OVERALL STORY: I don't know if I can accurately put this show into words. I loved this show a lot. I've found that recently it has been hard to finish shows--not just because my life is busy--but because I eagerly want to start new shows. So this was the first show that I never wanted to stop watching up until it ended. What I loved about this show was I was constantly surprised by what had occurred. I thought I had things figured out early on but then the show flipped on its head and said "no that was a red herring! It is actually this." It was really fun to be surprised by that because it has been a while since I was that shocked. And although this show is listed as a romantic comedy it had some really dark elements. We end up finding out that the reason why he had DID was because if he did anything bad as a child (even for small things like not playing the piano correctly) the main girl was punished. They had lived together as kids but both blocked out these memories because of how painful they were. And this show did not gloss over this at all. What I did appreciate on the abusive plot was that when they faced their abuser at the end of the show. They did not forgive him or try to understand him. They are working towards finding a peace with their past but they are not trying to make amends with him and I appreciated that. I thought it made it more realistic. But darker elements aside this show was super cute! I loved all the different personalities and I loved the romance. I laughed and I cried. It was really an amazing show and I highly recommend it. I enjoyed every minute. My one note though is that I thought the end was wrapped up rather fast but it wasn't bad. They just built it up to be this big thing and then they rushed it when it actually happened.

MAIN ROMANCE: I loved this romance so much. I felt like it was realistic which is impressive considering all of the ways it could have gone completely wrong. I mean it was between a doctor and a patient so it wouldn't have been realistic. But the actor and actress portrayed this amazingly well. Their relationship was great because it happened not in spite of the mental illness or because of it (although it did further to development) but because of them as people. She saw him as a person and not the disease that he often categorized himself with. She did not ignore his disorder or anything but she did not only look at him in a doctoral way. If that makes sense. But all of that aside they just had so many seriously great moments. One of my favorite moments is after their breakup (stupid Oh Ri On) they agree to date again and it is so adorable. They both just look so happy and they deserve it after the crap both of them have been through up to that point.

CHA DO HYUN: He was such a complicated character and I adored him. He worked so hard to function in society and be a good person. And he worked so hard to clean up after the mess his personalities made. He was genuinely an amazing person. He wasn't vindictive and power hungry like all of his family. I thought he put too much blame on himself for things but in the end he overcame that a little bit and stopped blaming himself for things that weren't his fault.
Shin Se Gi: The psychotic, bad boy personality. I really enjoyed him when he was on screen because he was HILARIOUS. And he has a lot of depth that you didn't expect. I never expected to care about a personality so much but he was just so fun to watch and analyze I couldn't help it. Also the hair was pretty bomb.
Perry Park: I wish we had seen more of him because he was so great. I mean he was funny in the way that he likes to build bombs out of rice cookers and also loves to fish. He was just so eccentric and spontaneous. And in the end he was the first personality to "leave" and I actually cried a little. But that could have been because I am a sympathetic crier and he was crying....
Ahn Yo Sub:Also known as the suicidal personality. He was played as a 17 year old boy and he actually reminded me of that. He could be super depressing at times but other moments the things he'd say were so dramatic they were played in a humorous way. We didn't see a lot of him but he did make his mark on the show.
Ahn Yo Na: This is the 16 year old girl personality. Just some background is when the main guy is in a situation of intense mental stress she comes out. Because a 16 year old girls mind is pretty simplistic in comparison to everything else. (I'm not saying if you are 16 you are simple but in comparison it is taking his mind to a less pressured place.) She had the most comedic moments especially when she meets Oh Ri Jin's brother. She made me laugh so hard.
Nana: We didn't run into her until the very end so I don't have a lot to say about her. But she was created basically to replicate Oh Ri Jin. I wish we had seen more of her because she is hinted way early on in the show but for the brief moment we saw her she was great.
Mr. X:Like Nana we don't get him until the very end. But he is the personality designed to basically help all the personalities merge back into one person. I thought he was kind of sweet and amazing. And he spat straight wisdom out of his mouth -- he is designed to mimic a father though so maybe I shouldn't have been surprised.

OH RI JIN:
She is a really good definition of a strong female lead. I loved how she interacted with all the personalities. She fought for what she wanted and she was not afraid to tell someone how she felt. She was not abrasive like some other female leads which was nice. I didn't expect some of the things that happened with her though. Like her whole past was insane and unexpected. She had to go through so much and I was impressed that she reacted to everything the way she did. She was very level minded but still knew how to have fun and live. She helped others around her become better and I just really loved her as the female lead.

OH RI ON:
I love the actor who plays him and this role was no different. Although he did annoy me at times because he was trying to make this show have a love triangle (because he and Oh Ri Jin are not actually related) and I do not like love triangles. Or people trying to shoot holes in my ship. But he was hilarious and as a brother I thought he was great. And the scene at the end with him and that girl was one of the best parts of the show hands down.

FAVORITE QUOTES:
"If you want to die, you can.--but do it tomorrow. If you still want to kill yourself tomorrow, then do it the day after. If you still have the same pain on the next day, it's still not too late to die the day after or the day after that...If you live your life each day like that, a good day will definitely come. Then one day, you will tell yourself, 'good that I didn't kill myself that day.'"

"Your imagination determines the size of your fear. Fear is the fruit of your imagination-- something made up by your own mind."

"She was the first person to enter my desolated and cold castle. She was the person who waited anxiously for me to come back. She was the one who told me words that were more consoling then 1000 words. She was the person who gave me the warmest snowman in the world. She was the person who could make me happy just from looking at her. She is the person who I can't make it up to even if I atone for the rest of my life."

"Everyone has many different personalities in himself. There's 'me' who wants to die and 'me' who wants to live. There's 'me' who wants to give up everyday and then there's 'me' who at least wants to try. I live my life fighting myself everyday...You only need to have the courage to fight."

(Sorry about all the quotes-- I couldn't pick a favorite!)
