Drama Update

DRAMA UPDATE: 

I don't normally do this but I have a need to rant about the show I'm watching. It is a show on Netflix called Find Yourself. Sounds interesting right? Well it is but let me tell you, you have to sift through a lot of crap to find the little gems of a good show. 

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST 15/16 ISH EPISODES OF THE SHOW. 

First of all, I will still be finishing this show (as of right now anyway) so a full review should be up (hopefully) soon...once I can make my way through all 41 freaking episodes. 

Here is a bullet point list of all the things that make me want to throttle the characters and the writers of this show: 

• Let me just start by saying that the main leads Yuan Song and He Fanxing have NO CHEMISTRY. I will be honest in the fact that I am not a fan of relationships with larger age gaps, like the 10 year one in this one but I was willing to look past it. But it was not presented well at ALL. Yuan Song (our main guy) just out of nowhere likes her and actively pursues her. And then He Fanxing is all like "wow okay I'm on board!" I think if you are going to attempt a relationship like there you CANNOT USE THE WHOLE INSTA-LOVE THING. 
  

    The progression of their relationship just makes it even worse because of the fact that they haven't gotten any build up at all! He Fanxing gets more screentime with the second male lead than with Yuan Song--how does that make any sense!? 

• Which brings me to the second male lead who I will only refer to as SML. 
  

    I have never run into a more manipulative lying jerk face in my life. (Except maybe the second male lead in The Liar and His Lover but that is a story for another day....) So SML is a rich CEO who is 37 years old and more "socially appropriate" for He Fanxing. He is aware pretty much from the start that she likes AND IS DATING somebody else. But does he respect that? No, of course not. Instead he gives her horrible advice in order to help lead her to an eventual breakup-- I know they will break up because of it. The characters in this show are all a little more immature for their age but I cannot believe this guy was playing these stupid mind games at 37!!! What's even worse is the fact that he is practically stalking her and yet she does not even notice. He is just an awful person who does not treat the woman he so-called "loves" with respect and honestly, I think she should file a restraining order or something because he needs to learn to back off.

• He Fanxing (our "lovely" main lead) is one of the worst main leads I have ever seen in a drama. The big part of her character is the fact that she is 32 and has never dated in her life. (Which is a glimpse into my future) She is desperate for true love and wants that whirlwind romance. That's great and all but innocence about stuff like that does not constitute her UTTER STUPIDITY. 
  

    Explain to me how in heavens name she does not see that she is stringing two guys along?! She is dating Yuan Song but she is spending a lot of time with SML--like A LOT. And yet she does not mention that at all to her boyfriend. If I were Yuan Song I would not be happy when I find out and I really hope he does because he doesn't deserve to be treated like that. Her naivety is just stupidity and the more I see of her the less I respect her as a person. It is honestly just not that believable that she wouldn't notice the fact that SML likes her. (Ex. the necklace, the mysteriously matching badmitton clothing, the borderline stalking....hmmmm just a little suspicious) 

• THE NECKLACE. I had to give this one its own section because of just how much it annoyed me. So first of all SML gave He Fanxing a necklace because, he claims, "You've been helping me out recently so I just want to give you this really nice, expensive necklace." Uhuh sure. But she being all sorts of oblivious is all like "even though I have a boyfriend I am going to accept this necklace and WEAR IT ON MY FREAKING DATE WITH MY BOYFRIEND." 
  

    You think that's it? No, in fact, it gets worse. (I do just want to note that so far He Fanxing has not mentioned to Yuan Song that SML got her that necklace) Yuan Song gets her a necklace as well but she ends up finding out he spent a lot of money on it and--worrying about his finances--returns the necklace. 

    Let me get this straight. SML gets you an expensive necklace and you keep it. But when your BOYFRIEND gets you a necklace you return it? I get the fact that she is concerned about his finances but nothing is worse than having someone return something like that especially considering she accepted a gift from another man. Then instead of telling him she ends up getting it back and it is all "happily ever after." Everytime I see that necklace I just want to strangle her. 

• Lastly, THE SECRET RELATIONSHIP OF THE MAIN COUPLE. 

  

Basically He Fanxing--being all embarrassed because of the giant age gap--decides to keep it a secret. (This was, of course, suggested by the SML.) Yuan Song is originally not in favor of it because what is there to hide? It is not like they are having an affair like seriously. But he is determined to date her so he's all like "alright we will keep it secret for 3 months." I'm still a little disappointed in him for giving in. The thing about secret relationships is that I generally don't view them in a favorable light. I think that keeping your relationship from others a secret is not taking responsibility for it and can cause a lot more problems in the future. But for the sake of drama I get it--except in this case. Having a secret relationship causes a lot of problems and unless you have the right relationship foundation the only thing it will be is frustrating. Such is the case with this couple. They got into their relationship too fast and now it is being put to the test and failing. Because of this I really doubt they can handle that much stress on their relationship. This is the worst thing they could be doing. 

You are probably asking yourself right now, "If she hates it so much why is she still watching it?" I have been asking that same question ever since this show really started making its downward plunge. However, I am invested in the secondary characters like He Fanxing's brother and some of her coworkers. A lot of people I have read said that they made the show worth it so I'm hoping that will be true. Now just to balance it out and make it fair here are a couple things I like about the show: 

• Yuan Song is definitely one of my favorite parts of the show. He is genuinely a good guy and he's also really good looking which is a plus. I feel awful that he is dating He Fanxing because I believe he deserves better. Sometimes I do think he gives in way to easily (see the secret relationship section) but I like his character 
• He Fanxing's brother is another character I like. I feel like he has more depth than the others and he is someone I can readily support. Like the others he is more immature but somehow the writers wrote his character so that is actually worked. 
  

Thank you for taking the time to read my rant. There is still a chance I might drop the show but for right now I am determined to finish it to give it a full, complete review. Hopefully things will get better and I might have a more favorable report when the final review comes along.
